Little ole’ me.

Howdy!

My name is Kendyl Ramsey and I am the Artist in Residence (AIR) for ArtsAltoona. As the AIR, I get to network with area artists, help plan events, and teach art classes. In addition to my duties as Artist in Residence, I will be designing all the graphics for ArtsAltoona. I am incredibly honored and excited to get to work with such an amazing organization!

A Yankee Beginning

I grew up in southwestern New Hampshire with three sisters. (They will be reading this so shoutout to Aynsley, Sydney, and Taylor) Homeschooled for the majority of my life, I had unique opportunities to get involved with the local arts community. My grandfather, a self-taught artist, was my first art teacher. He would make me draw and shade barrels–not very exciting for a little girl.  Around the age of 13, I audited a college art history class with my mom and began taking private drawing lessons. From then on art would be my life. I was part of several local art shows and even sold a painting!

The Altoona Mirror captured our engagement! Sheetz coffee in all!

After high school, I decided to attend Pensacola Christian College in sunny Pensacola, Florida. I must have liked it there because I was a student for the next five and a half years! I received an associate’s degree in Theology and a BS in Visual Arts with a concentration in Studio Art. Midway through my time at college, my family moved to San Antonio, Texas. One day during Christmas break, in the middle of my parent’s living room, I declared that I wanted to teach art. This was quite a departure from my previous statements that I would never in no way ever teach. My plan was set to graduate, return to Texas, and teach art. Perfect right?

Home in ‘Toona Town

Not quite. Three semesters before college graduation I met John. He was handsome, funny, and from a town in Pennsylvania with a weird name. A month after meeting we were dating seriously. In 2015, John proposed to me at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art and we got married the following June. We live in Altoona with our fur babies Dexter, a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, and Piper the cat. Being so gosh darn cute they have their own Instagram @dexternandpiper.

Odds and Ends

When not working, I love to watch documentaries, travel, read, and take naps. I am obsessed with anything British. My ultimate travel destinations are England and the city of Prague. My favorite medium as an artist is oils and favorite subject is people. With my blog articles, I hope to share with you a behind-the-scenes look at what I do for ArtsAltoona. If you have any idea for blog topics and formats let me know by leaving a comment!
