Good Grief! Lots of Live Music This Weekend!

By March 29, 2019 Uncategorized

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, March 29 through Thursday, April 4.

Lots of local favorites populate area stages this weekend and upcoming week.

Zach Wade & the Good Grief return to action on Altoona stages both Friday and Saturday night. Namesake, singer and guitarist Zach Wade, lead guitarist Rogan Allen, bassist Devin Pierce and drummer Keegan Allen will mix some new songs, established original song favorites and select classic and modern acoustic rock covers at McGarvey’s on Friday night, and the Black & Gold Tavern on Saturday night. Chet “Che” Denny will open Friday’s show.

If you need to burn off some steam on the dance floor, Shallow 9 returns to the Four Dees Lounge on Saturday night, complete with all-out sound and light production. If you want a table or seat, you may want to arrive early, as the Dees usually gets crowded when Shallow 9 is in the house.

For connoisseurs of hard-hitting music, McGarvey’s hosts a four-band bill on Saturday night. Performing will be northern Cambria County heavy rockers Negan, Johnstown’s sinister metal force Darkness On The Radio, Altoona area “dadcore” punk rockers The Snipped and Pittsburgh area hard-rocking force A Common Crown. That show gets under way at 9 p.m.

Punk and roots rock join forces at Ebensburg’s Castle Pub with a band triple-bill on Saturday night. The Marauders’ Ben Dumm and his East Side Band will fire off high-energy roots rock original songs and covers, with The Flannels and X’s For Eyes providing high-velocity punk rock. The music gets under way at 9 p.m.

Lots of acoustic music options populate area stages this weekend as well. The Hungry Duck Eatery in Roaring Spring hosts its monthly Songwriter’s Night on Friday evening, where area songwriters are invited to come perform their creations before a receptive dinner audience. The music begins at 8 p.m. Meanwhile, western PA-based singer and songwriter Alyssa Hankey brings her blend of acoustic folk and blues back to Altoona’s Railroad City Brewing Company on Friday evening starting at 7 p.m. Bill Ferrell entertains with his blend of fingerstyle guitar displays, original songs and classic rock and country favorites at the Oak Spring Winery’s “Friday Wine Down” starting at 6 p.m. Friday evening. Popular duo Ed N’Born bring their fun acoustic stylings to the Loretto Pub & Grill in Loretto on Friday night, and Hollidaysburg’s Argonne Cafe on Saturday night. And Johnstown acoustic duo The Evergreens returns to the U.S. Hotel in Hollidaysburg on Friday night, before heading to Hastings on Saturday afternoon to entertain wine connoisseurs during the Hastings Wine Festival at the Hastings Memorial Building. That event starts at 3 p.m., with proceeds going toward the Hastings Park & Pool.

These are a few of many live music options to choose from this weekend. So cure your cabin fever by getting out to support some live music this weekend!

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
