More Summer Concert Series, Dadcore, Mayhem and Coalport Street Fair This Weekend!

By June 14, 2019 Around the Area, Music

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, June 14 through Thursday, June 20.

A few more summer concert series make their returns this weekend. The “Summer Sounds Concert Series” reconvenes at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza on Friday evening, with This Albatross providing the music starting at 6 p.m. Admission is free. Two more popular summer concert series resume for the season on Sunday: The Central Blair Recreation Commission and Blair County Recreation Board will again sponsor Sunday evening concerts at Valley View Amphitheater; their Free Summer Concert Series kicks off with Rokkandy, and the music begins at 5 p.m. Meanwhile, the Hollidaysburg Area Arts Council presents its first “Music in the Burg” concert of the season at Canal Basin Park on Sunday evening, with area bluegrass favorites Mama Corn performing at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The 20th annual Coalport Street Fair takes place on Saturday in the heart of Coalport. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature a variety of activities, vendors, a parade at 1 p.m., children’s games and activities, and live music from White Shadow at 11 a.m. and Joe Quick at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Dads who like a little punk rock in their routine can ring in Father’s Day on Saturday night at McGarvey’s, during the first Father’s Day Extravaganza. Hosted and headlined by local “dadcore” rockers The Snipped (whose four members are all dads), this show will feature music from five bands, plus contests and prizes with a ‘dad’ theme. Besides The Snipped, performers include X’s For Eyes, The Flannels, The New 52 from Pittsburgh and Dave Hates Everything. The music starts at 8 p.m.

Metal music will be the focus of the annual “Mayhem in the Mountains,” happening Saturday afternoon and evening at Eagle Valley Paintball near Tyrone. The music begins at 3 p.m., and will feature local and regional hard rock and metal bands Dilemma, Maul, Fyre, Deadside, Forsaken By Society, Oceans to Ash, Negan and Dragline. Games and overnight camping will be available. The show is all ages, and admission is $10 per person.

Of course, the roar of motorcycle thunder will pick up next weekend with Johnstown’s Thunder in the Valley, Altoona’s Pennsylvania Roundhouse Rally and other motorcycle-themed gatherings across the area. To provide a comprehensive listing of the live music events surrounding these festivals, next week’s live music listing will be posted on Thursday, June 20 (instead of Friday); please submit your live music event information for that weekend and upcoming week (through June 27) by emailing it to jptheprofessor@gmail.com by 9 a.m. Thursday to make sure it is included in the listing.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
