Guitars For Vets, Hudson Falcons This Weekend!

By November 8, 2019 Around the Area, Music

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, November 8 through Thursday, November 14.

With the nation celebrating Veterans Day on Monday, one of the live music highlights happening this weekend is an event that uses the gift of music to help veterans battling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other issues. Founded in 2007, Guitars For Vets is a federally-registered national nonprofit organization that provides guitars and music lessons to war-afflicted veterans, to enable the healing power of music to help soldiers cope with the unseen scars of combat duty. The Altoona Chapter of Guitars For Vets will present an event to raise awareness about the organization and collect guitar donations for local veterans on Saturday at the Oak Spring Winery Altoona location. The event starts at noon, with music happening from 4 to 9 p.m. Performing will be Rogan Allen, Chad Patterson, Dave Howsare, a jam session featuring Guitars For Vets instructors and students, and the Free Wine Band. Admission is free, and a food truck will be available. Used guitar donations will be accepted. For more information about the organization, visit the website www.guitars4vets.org.

Also this weekend, New Jersey-based touring blue-collar punk-and-roll band the Hudson Falcons return to McGarvey’s on Friday night, headlining a four-band bill. Closing in on two decades as a band, the Hudson Falcons have released five albums and toured around the country. Also performing will be The Flannels, the Rik Golden Band (and the official CD-release celebration of Rik’s new album, “Hold On”) and the debut performance of new Altoona-based punk band Milpool. The music begins at 9 p.m.

And renowned Texas-based singer, songwriter, novelist and humorist Kinky Friedman will be performing in State College on Monday evening, entertaining at Webster’s Bookstore & Cafe. Touring the country this month in support of his newest album, “Resurrection,” as well as a new book, Kinky will present his distinctive brand of witty and socially-conscious American music. Opening the performance will be Brian Molnar. The music begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person. A dinner buffet precedes the performance from 5:30 to 7 p.m., cost is $15 per person.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
