Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, January 24 through Thursday, January 30.
Benefits and celebrations highlight the area’s live music slate this weekend.
On Friday evening, the “Cabin Fever 2 – U.S. Armed Forces Mothers Fundraiser” takes place at The Casino near Lakemont Park. Felix & the Hurricanes will provide the musical entertainment following a dinner. Tickets are $15 per person, which includes music and dinner; proceeds will help out the U.S. Armed Forces Mothers, a non-profit organization who sends care packages to U.S. troops stationed overseas.
The Central PA Humane Society’s annual “Chili Fest” event returns on Saturday evening to Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society (upstairs hall). But it adds a new twist this year, as the event is now “Chili Fest & Wings,” with a variety of wings being served up along with chili recipes from various area eateries and establishments. Shallow 9 will provide the musical soundtrack for the chili and wing-gorging fun. Tickets are sold out for this event, but a waiting list is available should any ticket-holders cancel from attending.
Saturday also marks the start of the Chinese New Year 2020, The Year of the Rat. Music fans can ring in the Chinese New Year during McGarvey’s annual Chinese New Year celebration, as The Zero Club provides a mix of classic rock from the 1970s through 1990s. The Cambria County-based rock group introduces their two newest members, as singer Stacy Feighner and guitarist/singer Tony Feighner join singer Mike Davis, guitarist Bob Gray, bassist Josh Yahner and drummer Dave “Red Dawg” Solinski. An all-you-can-eat Chinese food buffet will be available as well. The festivities begin at 9 p.m.
And area jam music adventurers Mysterytrain present their annual “Pajama Jam” event in Tipton this weekend. A pre-party will lead off the event on Friday night, with the High Street Drifters performing at 9 p.m., followed by an open jam. The music then resumes at 2 p.m. on Saturday with a number of area bands and performers, including the High Street Drifters, Dee Maple Duo, Nag Champions, CJ Oswald, the host band Mysterytrain and Steal Your Face. For location details, visit Mysterytrain’s website, www.mysterytrainlive.net. Overnight sleeping and camping will be available inside the venue, and vendors and food will be available. Tickets are $20 in advance, and $30 at the gate. And wearing pajamas is totally acceptable.
For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.
Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
