Live United Live, Norman Nardini, Alex Meixner Live Streams This Weekend!

By April 24, 2020 April 26th, 2020 Around the Area, Music

Here is a listing of Pennsylvania live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, April 24 through Thursday, April 30.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19/coronavirus situation, all live music venues across the state are not able to host performances at this time. However, some bands and performers are staging online performances on social media from their own homes, studios and other facilities. Below are such situations that have been announced (that I am aware of); keep checking back, as this listing will be updated as new shows are announced. Feel free to take in any of these performances, and if a “virtual tip jar” situation is available, please consider tipping these performers, and support them during this time when they cannot earn income playing shows at public venues. Websites for these performers are also listed; please consider purchasing their music digitally or via CD, which is another way to SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!

Among some of the noteworthy live music streaming events this weekend is a benefit event for Centre County United Way on Friday evening. Hosted by Centre County United Way, Live United Live begins at 6 p.m., and will feature 25 performers from the Centre County music community, all performing from their homes to raise donations for Centre County United Way and 28 partnering agencies supporting Centre County residents with needs relating to education, financial stability, health and more. The performers include Jason Adams, Anchor and Arrow, Biscuit Jam, Kevin Briggs, Donny Burns & the 3rd Degree, Molly Countermine & Rene Witzke, Hops & Vines, Kristi Jean & Her Ne’er Do Wells, Luke Cimbala, John “JT” Thompson, Pure Cane Sugar, Rama Lama, Sgt. Bob, Chris Strait, Bill Strayer, Caryn Dixon Jellen and more.

The “Uncrowned King of Pittsburgh Rock and Roll,” Norman Nardini, returns to present another live stream event on Friday evening starting at 7 p.m. His third such live stream event, Norman had made his online events into something special, as he not just plays music, but shares memories, perspectives and humor with the audience. He shares stories of his musical past with his prior bands, Diamond Reo and Norman Nardini & the Tigers. He also shares memories of his parents and his childhood. During his first live stream, he did a “show and tell” segment featuring several of the guitars and other gear he has used during his career. And he shares perspectives about his creative process, how he comes up with his songs, and his approaches to songwriting, such as telling stories and creating characters through his lyrics. These presentations have been entertaining, personal and insightful, enabling viewers to learn more about Norman and his music.

And for a little live streaming polka fun time this weekend, Pennsylvania native Alex Meixner (who performed during last year’s Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in State College, and performs occasionally at Altoona’s Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society) presents a special brunch event live stream on Sunday afternoon starting at 2 p.m. Armed with accordion, Alex will perform polka favorites, original songs, and his polka-fied treatments of pop and rock songs (perhaps even including his distinctive polka take on Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train”).

Live streaming events appear to be the “new normal” for live music heading toward the summer season, as live music venues remain closed and a number of the region’s top outdoor festivals and music events have been cancelled due to the pandemic and health concerns. On Friday, organizer Ron Kodish announced the cancellation of this year’s Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival, slated to happen in June at the Quiet Oaks Campground near Cross Fork (north of Renovo). That event joins the Central PA 4th Fest and Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in State College, People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts and Crafts in Boalsburg, Philipsburg Heritage Days, the Westsylvania Jazz & Blues Festival in Indiana, Deutschtown Music Festival in Pittsburgh, and Johnstown’s Thunder In the Valley, PolkaFest and Flood City Music Festival as some of the events that have been cancelled for this year due to COVID-19.

So again, SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC by checking out the live stream events and by purchasing CD’s, music and merchandise from area musicians to help them out during this situation.
