Mansion Mania Rockfest, Songs for Sarah and Hanna Barakat!

By June 4, 2021 Music

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, June 4 through Thursday, June 10.

With the recent easing of some COVID-19-related restrictions, more live music venues across the area are beginning to host performances. The listing below includes both area live public shows and online live-streaming shows; keep checking back, as this listing will be updated as new shows are announced.

If you are attending a public show, be aware that seating and admission may be limited due to remaining COVID-19 restrictions, and masks and social distancing may be required. Please be responsible, and respect others’ personal space if they wish to socially distance from other people.

For online performances, if a “virtual tip jar” situation is available during live streams, please consider tipping these performers, and support them during this time when they cannot earn income playing shows at public venues. Websites for these performers are also listed; please consider purchasing their music digitally or via CD, which is another way to SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!

One of the musical highlights during the next seven days is Saturday’s Mansion Mania Rockfest on the lawn of Altoona’s Baker Mansion. The music begins at 1 p.m., and features performances from Challenger Deep and Half Tempted. Admission is $20, with proceeds benefiting the Blair County Historical Society and its work to preserve local history and heritage.

Another highlight is the two-day “Songs for Sarah” festival and benefit, happening in Tipton on Friday and Saturday. Hosted by Mysterytrain, the festival will feature a number of bands and performers both days. Admission is $40 per person for the entire event, with proceeds going to Sarah Petry. Sarah is the daughter of Damien “Peach” Petry, an area musician who passed away unexpectedly on March 27. Surviving members of Peach’s band, the High Street Drifters, will host a special jam session at the event on Saturday night. (For location details, visit www.mysterytrainlive.net)

Polka fans will rejoice as the Johnstown Polka Fest returns on Friday and Saturday after missing last year due to COVID-19. The festival has a new location, People’s Natural Gas PArk near downtown Johnstown. See the listing below for scheduled performers on both days.

And arriving on the stage of McGarvey’s on Thursday evening is Austin, Texas-based singer Hanna Barakat and her band, featuring Altoona’s Lisa Fazenbaker on drums. Hanna’s unique sound blends hard modern rock with Middle Eastern elements; she and her group will perform songs from her 2019 debut CD, “Siren.” A former member of local bands Pneumatic and Spirit Lost, Lisa met Hanna while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, and eventually relocated to the Austin area and joined Hanna’s group. The PennSoulvanians will open Thursday’s show, which begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $5.
