Summer Sounds (Postponed), Juneteenth Celebrations, Nanty Glo Community Days!

By June 11, 2021 June 15th, 2021 Music

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, June 11 through Thursday, June 17.

With the continued easing of COVID-19-related restrictions, more live music venues across the area are hosting performances. The listing below includes both area live public shows and online live-streaming shows; keep checking back, as this listing will be updated as new shows are announced.

If you are attending a public show, be aware that seating and admission may be limited at some locations due to remaining COVID-19 restrictions, and masks and social distancing may be required. Please be responsible, and respect others’ personal space if they wish to socially distance from other people.

For online performances, if a “virtual tip jar” situation is available during live streams, please consider tipping these performers, and support them during this time when they cannot earn income playing shows at public venues. Websites for these performers are also listed; please consider purchasing their music digitally or via CD, which is another way to SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!

This weekend was expected to feature the return of Altoona’s “Summer Sounds Concert Series” to Heritage Plaza with Hair Force One taking the stage; however, the prognosis for wet weather has caused the event to be postponed. A rescheduled date will be announced.

Among the events taking place this weekend are two separate Juneteenth events in Johnstown. The “2021 Juneteenth Music Celebration” will take place Saturday at People’s Natural Gas Park near downtown Johnstown, and features a day-long slate of performers; see the listing below for more details. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Flood City Youth Fitness Academy. And Johnstown’s Central Park hosts a week-long “2021 Juneteenth Celebration” beginning on Sunday afternoon. Each day will feature various speakers, presentations and musical events. See the listing below to find out when the music will take place.

The Nanty Glo Fire Department will host the Nanty Glo Community Days celebration this weekend. Festivities kick off on Friday night and happen through Sunday afternoon. Both Friday and Saturday nights feature music, with Fuse entertaining on Friday and Giants of Science providing the tunes on Saturday. Also happening will be the annual Paul Galko Memorial Bulldog Crawl, cornhole tournaments on Friday and Saturday, a duck race on Saturday, a kayak race on Sunday, children’s activities, food and craft vendors, a refreshment tent and more. Admission is free.

And for fans of bluegrass music who don’t mind a fun trip into the wilderness, the annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival kicks off Wednesday and continues through Saturday night at Quiet Oaks Campground near Cross Fork in the northern PA Wilds. An open stage kicks things off on Wednesday night, with scheduled performers playing on two stages Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Among this year’s highlights will be a special four-band celebration of the music from “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou” on Friday night, followed by nationally-renowned bluegrass and Americana group The Hillbenders; as well as returning popular performers such as Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike, Fireside Collective, The Hillbilly Gypsies, Colebrook Road, Altoona’s Mama Corn, Bug Tussle, Van Wagner and many more. Proceeds from the festival benefit the Lupus Foundation of America Philadelphia Tri State. For more details and ticket information, visit the website www.smokedcountryjam.com.
