Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, March 18 through Thursday, March 24.
Although the official St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) has passed, the celebrations and wearing of the green continue through the weekend, with numerous Irish-themed parties and events happening throughout the region.
One of those events is the annual “Mac’s Irish Bash,” which makes its return on Friday evening after a two-year absence. The bash takes place at the Blair County Convention Center, and will again raise funds toward the McEldowney Academic Scholarship Fund. Started in 2004 in memory of former civic leader and Altoona city councilman Dick “Mac” McEldowney, “Mac’s Irish Bash” has raised more than $325,000 to help out area students in their academic endeavors. The event will feature dinner, refreshments, and musical entertainment from The Irish Pretenders and Shallow 9. The doors open at 6 p.m.
Also happening this weekend is Tyrone’s annual “Irish Heritage Weekend,” happening Friday evening and Saturday in downtown Tyrone. Events include a “Cookie Crawl” and fireworks display on Friday evening, a “Luck of the Irish” parade Saturday afternoon (starts 2 p.m.), an Irish fashion dog show on Saturday morning, 5K and 10K Gold Rush races on Saturday morning, children’s activities, vendors and live music performances. The Altoona Brass Collective will perform on Friday night, and Full Kilt will play on Saturday afternoon and evening. See the listing below for music details.
Aside from the St. Patrick’s frivolity this weekend, a more serious music-related event happens on Saturday evening at the Everett High School Auditorium. “Songs for Ukraine: A Concert of Hope” will raise funds for the International Red Cross to help in the relief efforts in war-torn Ukraine. The concert will begin at 5 p.m., and feature performances from Matt Otis & the Sound, Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors, as well as St. Francis University’s “Setup Crew,” Everett School District students, guest speakers from Ukraine and more. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. The event will also be livestreamed online via Matt Otis & the Sound’s Facebook page.
And for fans of the heavier side of rock music, McGarvey’s presents two shows over the next seven days. New York-based Tool tribute group Schism will return on Saturday night. The world’s first and longest national touring tribute to Tool, Schism has been performing for more than two decades, and is the only Tool tribute actually endorsed by Tool on their website. They will celebrate the music of Tool with all of its intensity and instrumental precision. Opening will be northern Cambria County-based Alice In Chains tribute Deny Your Maker. The doors will open at 6 p.m., with music starting at 7.
Then on Tuesday night, McGarvey’s welcomes Long Island-based thrash-metal practitioners Extinction A.D. Formed in 2013, Extinction A.D. has released several EP’s and full-length albums. They will be performing material from their latest album, “Culture of Violence.” Opening the show will be Jacksonville, Florida’s Rhythm Of Fear and two local openers. The show begins at 8 p.m.
