Mayfest, Metal, Ukuleles and Deviation By Design This Weekend!

By April 29, 2022 Music

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, April 29 through Thursday, May 5.

Both outdoor and indoor events provide highlights to this weekend’s live music happenings.

The annual Huntingdon Mayfest on Saturday provides an outdoor highlight. Always taking place on the last Saturday in April, Mayfest’s activities stretch along Washington Street in downtown Huntingdon from 3rd to 8th Streets, plus additional sites near this vicinity. Multiple vendors, including arts and crafts vendors, local businesses, and food and refreshment vendors, will be set up along the street. Again, various sections of the festival will spotlight historical eras with volunteers and others dressed in period costumes; sections will include “Colonial Times,” “Back to the 50s,” “Victorian Era” and “Woodstock.” Children’s activities, live history programs and arts performances will also take place. And live music will again be a part of Mayfest, happening at various locations throughout the festival area. See the listing below for at least a partial schedule of the music happening during this year’s Mayfest. Admission to Mayfest is free, and plenty of nearby parking is available.

If you are a fan of heavy metal music, the ArtsAltoona Center hosts a “Metal Night” event on Friday evening beginning at 7 p.m. in the facility’s “Blank Canvas” area. Three bands will take the stage, beginning with Altoona’s Black Sun, followed by Johnstown’s The Heathen Parade and Pittsburgh’s Trainwrecked. There will also be face-painting by Ryan Radar for a $10 donation to ArtsAltoona. The show is open to those 18 and older, and admission is $5.

And two former crew members of the “Party Plane” known as Flight 19 will be landing back at the 4D’s Lounge on Saturday night with their new band project. Former Flight 19 singer Brian Thomas and drummer Paul Caracciolo are now crew members with Deviation By Design, which also features guitarist Jerry DPaoli (formerly of touring national act Dirty Black Halo) and bassist Craig Short (who performed on rap star Kurtis Blow’s self-titled 1980 debut album). The new group performs songs that are not frequently heard on stages, and delivers them in their own unique style, described as sometimes soft and tender, and sometimes hard and aggressive. Deviation By Design takes the stage at 10 p.m.

And for connoisseurs of the ukulele, your weekend has arrived, as the annual Allegheny Ukulele Soiree takes place from Friday evening through Sunday at the Altoona Grand Hotel ballroom areas. This ukulele festival will feature a variety of skill workshops for beginners through advanced players, as well as ukulele jam sessions, vendors, and featured performers and workshop hosts in concert. Featured performers this year include Del Rey, Katy Vernon, Donna Frost and Gerald Ross. Also present will be frequent Soiree attendees Mim (of Mim’s Ukes), Melissa Nannen, Amber Rozel and Debi Velasco. To find out more information and to register, visit the event’s website, www.ukuleesoiree.com. The Soiree is presented by the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective.

Again, there is a lot of live music to see and enjoy during the next seven days, so browse the listings below, and SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!
