Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, March 3 through Thursday, March 9.
Several highlight events punctuate the area’s live music slate this weekend. Pistol Peg & the Beer Kegs return to the stage to perform at the Rockin’ the Yard 200 Club benefit, taking place on Saturday evening downstairs at the Jaffa Shrine. A buffet dinner, cash bar and refreshments will be available, plus a basket raffle and other giveaways. Tickets for the event are sold out. Proceeds benefit Shriners Childrens Hospital and Combat Vets Association; Rockin’ the Yard is a 501c3 nonprofit performance arts organization.
The beginning of March means the start of Irish season on area music scene as St. Patrick’s Day approaches, and a few Irish-themed shows take place over the next few days. Formed in 2009, Harrisburg-based Celtic rockers the Kilmaine Saints will make their first Altoona appearance on Saturday night when they take the stage at McGarvey’s. Described as “equal parts Irish swagger, Scottish pride, and whiskey,” the Kilmaine Saints will display their high-energy style of music, mixing hard and punk rock with Celtic and Irish music flavors. Described as a mix of Irish punk rock and psychobilly, upstate New York-based group 1916 will kick off the music beginning at 9 p.m.
Popular local Celtic rockers Full Kilt start their busy month of performances on Saturday night by entertaining at the Moonshine Mine Saloon in Nanty Glo starting at 9 p.m., and following with a matinee “Irish Afternoon” performance on 2 p.m. Sunday at the Gallitzin American Legion.
And a popular band some readers might have heard of called Journey takes the stage at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College on Friday night, with special guests Toto opening. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m.
