The outstanding and memorable life of Altoona artist, Joe Servello

Church in the Middle of the Block | 7 p.m.

Joe Servello, American artist, was born and raised in Altoona, Pennsylvania.  He has worked as an actor, art and drama teacher, an art director for television,  a muralist, and gallery owner. As a commercial artist, Servello is best known as an illustrator of children's books; his most prominent assignments were the covers and interior art for several juvenile novels by William Kotzwinkle.  He has also done covers for republished detective novels by Fredric Brown and books by A. Attanasio and Leigh Brackett. His covers are done in a variety of styles for Kotzwinkle's books, his work tends to be playful and colorful.

Joe is especially known for his paintings and murals that focus on the railroad and scenes from his hometown. He has always been a generous donor of his works and his time. 

In recognition of his amazing life, Kathrine Muller, friend and collector of his work, developed a documentary with Jay T. Shaffer based on Joe’s accomplishments. 

Titled, “Not Your Average Joe”, the documentary debuted April 12, 2024 at the Sanctuary of ArtsAltoona. 

Church in the Middle of the Block will be screening the documentary on Aug. 14. This 45 minute film will begin at 7 p.m.

Admission is free, but donations are welcomed to help future community projects.
